Alumni Spotlight- January 2019

Lauren Walts Marwil is featured in our January Alumni Spotlight! Lauren is an awesome camp alum for many reasons…one of those is that she is the mother of Soph-Aloaf :). Lauren spent many years at CRC both as a camper and counselor, and has continued to be an active member of the Chippewa community. Since her last summer at Chippewa, she has visited camp many times and kept the Chippy tradition alive in her house and in her life. Read below to learn all about Lauren’s camp experience!

What years were you at CRC?
1970-1981. Took a year off in 1980 to go on a teen tour with Jodi Strauss.

Which summer was your favorite and why?
I loved them all. There would be absolutely no way to pick one in particular.
There was the one where we went through A LOT of counselors…another when Patti Katz was our CIT…And when we finally figured out how to bring candy to camp (and hide it in the woods in a metal locked box!).

What is your favorite camp memory?
Again… so many it’s impossible to choose.
Playing jacks at rest hour.

Crazy trips that somehow always had drama.

Mackinac Island!

I remember sitting in our Songfest costumes watching Richard Nixon resign as President. We had to sit perfectly still or points would be taken off. Seems crazy but we all did it!

What was your favorite activity at camp?
I loved riding, tennis, sailing. Camper-Counselor Day, Secret Pals Day, and Barnyard Bedlam were some of my favorites. I could go on and on…

Were you a Tan or a White?
TAN!

How do you keep in touch with your camp friends?
Mostly through social media and getting together way too infrequently.

Where do you live now?
Wilmette

What do you do?
I was a social worker and then stayed home to raise my kids. Trying to figure out that next step. Open to suggestions!

What do you miss most about camp?
The relationships. Just slipping into them every summer. I lived in the Detroit area and most of my friends lived in Chicago. So I couldn’t wait to get there every summer and was always so sad to leave. The relationships were so special and pure without any “real life” stuff getting in the way.

Is there anything else you want to share with your Chippy family?
I feel so lucky to have been a Chippy for so many years and am thrilled to share it with my daughter.
