This month our Alumni Spotlight features Carly Leavitt Sheppard. Carly is one of the most spirited Chippies we have ever known and always had a ton of positive energy while she was at camp. She was loved by her cabinmates, counselors and campers…she was even Honor Camper in 1997! Carly still comes back to CRC to visit which is always fun- she brings the same spunk to camp that she did when she was a camper and counselor! Read below to learn more about Carly’s camp experience…
What years were you at CRC?
1993-2002
Which summer was your favorite and why?
It’s hard to pick one favorite summer, but if I have to, I would pick 1997. I loved being in Trailriders and combining with my entire age group. Our cabin trip to Mackinaw Island stands out as one of my most favorite experiences.
What is your favorite camp memory?
I used to love when we could make announcements from the cabins…please repeat the last announcement. Also, I was a really good fun-bugger and always won those races during Pony Express. When I think of memories from camp, the most memorable times were those that were unplanned: sitting around the cabin playing Stationery Black Jack, impromptu runs to Trigs or Walmart, practicing for lip sync competitions, singing in the mess hall, etc.
What was your favorite activity at camp?
Tennis, especially when playing with Thomas C.
Were you a Tan or a White?
White!!!
How do you keep in touch with your camp friends?
We have monthly “LV98” dinners and see each other individually as well. I also keep in touch and have dinner with my close camp friends who were not in my cabin with individual and group dinners. Most of us live in the Chicago area, so we’re lucky in that regard. For those who don’t live in Chicago anymore, we continue to catch up on the phone, and we’re always texting funny memories.
Where do you live now?
Chicago
What do you do?
I teach 7th and 8th grade Social Studies at Edgewood Middle School in Highland Park. I always love having Chippies in my classes! Fun fact – I was a student there as well.
What do you miss most about camp?
I miss spending two months with my best friends, and just being silly all the time.
Is there anything else you want to share with your Chippy family?
I take responsibility, with Sari, for bringing “Stalk the Lantern” to Chippewa!
