Dear Chippewa Parent,
UN Day was today. This is one of the most popular programs at Chippewa, but also one of the most important. All summer long we try to teach the girls good sportsmanship, how to cooperate, how to live together and celebrate our differences, and how to be a responsible member of a global community. Last summer Lisa and I implemented a Friday night “Formal Retreat” program during which two of our oldest campers lower and fold our American flag, and we recite the Pledge of Allegiance. In addition to the American flag we fly the United Nations flag. We have an international staff member sing their own anthem, recite poems from their countries and teach a little bit about their cultures too. We do this in the common interest of world peace and diplomacy in mind. Also with the understanding that there is a much bigger world out there, and perhaps if we were all a little more open to learning about one another’s differences, there could be less war and fighting out there. We view our community as a mini “world.” Children are like sponges and there is no better place to teach moral global practices than right here at camp. I really believe that I’m in the midst of future congresswomen, lawyers, doctors, teachers, bankers, presidents and other potentially influential professionals. We understand the implications of our lessons, decisions and the impressions that we leave. Our staff is a very important part of this process. They are at the front lines when it comes to the development of Chippewa youth, and we are very adamant about making certain that they are in it for “the right reasons”. We can teach all the positive values in the world at camp, but without great people role modeling these ideals, we are nowhere. The bottom line is that we do not take our responsibilities lightly here, and we take pride in what our staff give to these girls each summer. I hope you do too. Back to UN Day though… Frankie B. and Ally T. organized and ran the program. They did a GREAT job. The camp was split into four countries (teams), and they have been cheering and getting hyped up now for days. There were two captains on each team, and along with a counselor adviser, they all worked at leading their teams to victory! Today brought everything from team sports like basketball and soccer to scavenger hunts, climbing challenges and horseback riding. The girls had a great time and we got lucky with beautiful weather. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day. Make sure to check out the pictures!
This past week we did Tan & White capture the flag, had a great Horseshoe Social, did a beautiful celebration of the life of Jenny Snyder, and had the great performer, Tom Pease sing for us around the fire. What a great time! Tomorrow is Camper/Counselor switch day (the campers become the staff for a day…yikes), we have a social with Ojibwa, we run the famous Tan & White Egg Marathon, host a final Banquet and put on an exciting dance show for you visitors! Visiting weekend is of course upon us and sadly our first session campers will be leaving on Saturday. Action until the very last second though! There IS STILL PLENTY OF CAMPING LEFT, and we are looking forward to the last week of first session. Keep an eye out for pictures. We sent an email regarding travel and visiting weekend last night (July 12). Please let me know if you’re a current parent who did not get this. Perhaps we have an incorrect email address on file.
A number of first session parents are asking about 2010 re enrollment and I just can’t quite wrap my head around that yet 8-) General enrollment will be open on July 17th from the website WHATS NEW section. I understand the need to know the 2010 dates however (hotel reservations, etc...) Here they are:
First Session- June 21- July 17
Second Session- July 18- Aug 13
Full Session- June 21 – Aug 13
Please don’t hesitate to call with any questions and I will look forward to talking with you all soon!
All best,
Cliff
